Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy ensures that children learn in a safe, caring and enriching environment. Children are taught how to keep themselves safe, to develop positive and healthy relationships and how to avoid situations where they might be at risk including by being exploited.
Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy also has a statutory responsibility to share any concerns it might have about a child in need of protection with other agencies and in particular police, health and children's services. Schools are not able to investigate child protection concerns but have a legal duty to refer them. In most instances Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy will be able to inform the parents/carer of its need to make a referral. However, sometimes the academy is advised by children's services or police that the parent/carer cannot be informed whilst they investigate the matter. We understand the anxiety parents/carers feel when they are not told about any concerns from the outset but follows legislation that aims to act in the interests of the child.
The following notice is made available to all visitors in reception. In addition all visitors are provided with additional safeguarding guidance.
Our academy is committed to safeguarding children and promoting children's welfare and expects all staff, governors, volunteers and visitors to share this commitment and maintain a vigilant and safe environment. Everyone has a responsibility to act without delay to protect children by reporting anything that might suggest a child is being abused or neglected. We would expect you to also report to the Headteacher or Designated Safeguarding Lead any behaviours of any adults working in the academy that may concern you. By signing in on our Inventory system you are agreeing to follow the academy's safeguarding advice to visitors and where appropriate the code of conduct for staff and volunteers.
At Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy our Key Adult is Mrs B Lofthouse. Other key adults also include the Year Managers who are Ms L. Moore, Ms S. Savage, Ms S. Baker, Mr K. Ellison and Mrs L. Cavanagh.
E-Safety
The world our children and young people live in is rapidly changing. Technologies are offering an abundance of opportunities in learning and in many aspects of daily life. We, as adults, are naturally cautious of these new technologies and can identify risks and threats. However, for young people they are a regular and familiar part of everyday life that are being enthusiastically embraced, sometimes with little thought for the risks and threats.
We actively encourage them to utilise the benefits of Information Communication Technology (ICT), whilst at the same time helping them to understand the dangers and make the right decisions about what they share, the way they do this and who they do it with.

If you put your profile on the internet, then it is your responsibility to control who sees it. Be aware that if you do put any images or views on the internet it is really on the internet for all to see. This means it can be copied, saved and shared without your permission. It is not only social media apps that allow children to communicate with people they do not know, online games sometimes allow this facility too. Pupils can report bullying anonymously through the SHARP System. This will directly contact a member of the pastoral staff who will follow up and ensure your concerns are addressed.
For other supportive services look at Knowsley Family Information Services. This service could help during the summer when teachers aren't as readily available with issues such as crime, health, debt, housing and parents.

In conjunction with Merseyside Police, Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy is involved in an initiative called Operation Encompass. The purpose of Operation Encompass is to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in, heard or witnessed a domestic abuse incident. Following such an incident, children will often arrive at school distressed, upset, worried and unprepared. Operation Encompass aims to ensure that appropriate academy staff, called key adults, are made aware early enough to support children and young people in a way that means they feel safe and included.

Safer School's Partnership
Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy also works in alliance with Safer Schools and Young People Partnership and has an on site School Liason Officer, PC Woodside. The role of the School Liaison Officer, is to work closely with schools, staff and to promote positive relationships between young people and the police.
